I am not a military expert. However,, I lived in Europe for some 20 years and know a bit of history. I am hoping a reader with military tactical knowledge will answer a question.
The French prepared for a Nazi Germany invasion by constructing a defensive line on his frontier. Known as the Maginot line, it was virtually impregnable. The idea was that it would slow an invasion down to allow French defenders to organize and defeat the German invaders.
The weak point in the Maginot line was on the frontier with Belgium. The Germans of course realized this, and after conquering Belgium they moved swiftly across the frontier with France. In brief, they went around - not through - the Maginot line. The rest, as they say, is history.
As is generally known, the Ukrainian offensive against the Russian defense line is advancing, but slowly. Too slowly. Ukraine must show dramatic results soon if it is to continue receiving substantial material support from the West.
Looking at the map of Russian defenses in Ukraine there seems to be a weak spot on the western coast of Crimea.
Question: why couldn´t Ukraine mount an amphibious invasion as in Normandy, WWII, thereby going around the strong Russian defenses? Is it an issue of terraine? The answer seems to be mixed. I have atttached an image of the Crimean coast to give you an idea.
